What is the ExpReCCS project about ?

The carbon capture and storage (CCS) sector is expanding rapidly in the Norwegian offshore region. However, it will be difficult to meet Europe’s decarbonization objectives. To achieve the desired goal of injecting 500 million tons of CO2 annually by 2050, significant new projects are required. This target is over a hundred times greater than the current confirmed figures.

Two things can help achieve gigatonne scale-up:
(1) clustering storage projects around shared facilities to reduce per unit transportation costs, and
(2) large regional aquifers with the potential to store large amounts of CO2.

The Horda Platform is already emerging as a regional storage hub with the Northern Lights onshore facility, the Troll regional aquifer, and three storage licenses in close proximity to each other. New regions in the southern North Sea are in the pipeline.

Is it really possible for several storage projects to operate side-by-side for many decades? We don’t know the answer yet.

Experience has shown that each individual project will create a pressurized zone that spreads outward over time. If neighboring projects come in each other’s way, it will be hard for each project to achieve their targeted injection rates. Regulators certainly want to avoid a situation where competing strategies create sub-optimal conditions for new satellite storage, making it hard to achieve regional targets.

The ExpReCCS project targets research questions related to this topic.
